Before & After: Fireplace Room
July 19, 2008
Now that we have the house on lockdown with baby gates, the Fireplace room is now safe to put all the breakable & low to the ground things that Socket loves to try to eat and/or toss on the floor.

After:
As you can see, we gave up on the earlier idea of stripping the paint off the fireplace. It’s just too big to deal with, and once we got the walls painted, decided the white didn’t look so bad anymore. I’d still like to do something about restoring the ceiling to a natural wood color, but that’s still a far-off project…

Also, we had a friend come over and take some pictures of baby Socket, so here’s a few more finished photos of his room:

You have done a beautiful job! The wall paint you’ve chosen takes away from the enormous whiteness of the room “before”. Good job!!

Hi,
I read the description of your fre place and it was so identical to mine that you might as well be talking about mine. I also had softer red brick and you are correct the wire brush was causing the break down of the brick. What kind of scraper did you use ? can you send a picture ? I have just began the job and to my delight the mantle piece was a beautufl natural teak after stripping the paint. I have now stripped 8 bricks with the Soy Gel. I have decided to make it an on going project. Each time we have a visitor, they have to clean one row of bricks. You have a beautiful house ! I would definitely not give up on the ceinling and fire place projects.

Hi Nour,
We used a Hyde chisel scraper – you can find them in the Home Depot paint dept (here’s a similar one: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xhc/R-100077517/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053)
Probably not going to do any more work on the fireplace/ceiling for now – we’re on to multiple other projects like the front yard & master bathroom!
Although, I did just use the soygel on a painted wood banister – it came out great. I’ll post pictures soon.
Thanks again
